Car Key Duplication in Staten Island: Why a Spare Key Saves You Money

Most drivers only think about a spare car key after the last one is gone. By then you are paying for an “all keys lost” job instead of a simple copy. This guide covers what a spare key costs in Staten Island, which keys we can duplicate, and what we don’t copy.

What a Spare Car Key Costs

Here are our actual prices. The price we quote on the phone is the price you pay, with no night or weekend surcharge.

Job Price
Spare transponder (chip) key, with a working key in hand $80–120
Spare smart / push-to-start key, with a working key in hand $180–300
Replacement chip key, all keys lost $150–200
Replacement smart key, all keys lost $200–350

Where a range is shown, the final number depends on the make, model and year. Tell us the vehicle when you call and we confirm the exact price before we drive out.

The gap between a spare and an all-keys-lost job is the reason to copy a key now. With a working key, we clone it and add the new one. With none, the car has to be read through the diagnostic port and a key programmed from scratch. See the full list in our Staten Island locksmith pricing guide.

Which Car Keys Can Be Duplicated

Basic metal keys

Older vehicles may still use a plain cut key with no chip. These are the simplest to copy.

Transponder (chip) keys

The chip lets the car start, so the key needs both cutting and programming. This covers a large share of cars from the late 1990s on, including many Toyota, Honda, Nissan and Ford models.

Remote keys and flip keys

These combine a blade with lock and unlock buttons. We cut the blade and program the remote at your vehicle for most makes and models.

Smart keys and push-to-start fobs

Keyless systems need a properly programmed fob. The fob itself is most of the cost, and a dealer will usually charge more for the same part and want the car brought in. For more detail, see our guide to key fob replacement and programming.

What We Don’t Copy

We don’t duplicate ordinary house or office keys. A hardware store copies those for a few dollars while you wait, so paying for a mobile call-out makes no sense. Our work is automotive keys, lockouts and lock changes. If you need a lock rekeyed instead, see why you should rekey the locks in a new home.

Dealership vs. Mobile Locksmith for a Spare Key

  • Dealership: you drive there during business hours, parts are sometimes ordered, and the price is usually higher.
  • Staten Key Bros: we come to your home, workplace or parking spot anywhere in Staten Island and cut and program the key on the spot.

When to Make a Spare

The best time is while you still have one working key. A few situations we see often:

  • You are down to your last key.
  • You bought a used car that came with only one key.
  • A spouse or family member needs a second key.
  • You don’t want to pay dealership prices.

For push-to-start cars, keep one fob for daily use and one stored safely at home, and replace fob batteries before they die.
